Sí, lo sabemos. Starbucks no es una franquicia (un pequeño error de Sofía Echo), pero su importancia para el sector es tan alta que no podíamos dejar de comentar algo.

STARBUCKS OPENS FIRST BULGARIAN COFFEE SHOP IN NOVEMBER
17:51 Tue 21 Oct 2008 - Petar Kostadinov

Starbucks will open its first Bulgarian coffee shop at the beginning of November 2008 in Sofia, a media statement said on October 21 2008.

The chain will enter the country through one of its franchisers, Greek firm Marinopoulos Bros, and the coffee shop itself would be operated by Marinopoulos Coffee Company Bulgaria. This will be the first of many other coffee shops in Bulgaria, the statement said.

The coffee shop will be on the corner of Vassil Levski Boulevard and Gurko Street, across the garden of the Soviet Army monument. The premises used to house one of Pizza Hut’s first franchises in Bulgaria, but the restaurant was closed down earlier this year.

Marinopoulos’ initial plans were to have the first Starbucks shops open in mid-2008, targeting a strong presence in Sofia, from where the chain would expand to other big Bulgarian cities, according to reports in Bulgarian media in November 2007.

Starbucks enters Bulgaria years after some of its European competitors have done the same. First in the market segment was Onda Coffee Break, an Irish-Bulgarian venture in which Greek fund Global Finance now owns the largest stake, followed last year by Costa Coffee.

WIRELESS OPERATOR MOBILTEL HUNTS FOR FRANCHISE SHOPS
12:34 Tue 23 Sep 2008 - dnevnik.bg

Mobiltel, the leading mobile operator in Bulgaria, which operates under the M-Tel brand, will kick on September 23 a franchise and representatives campaign across the country, the company said.

The campaign labeled M-Tel Partners is aimed at promoting entrepreneurship, the company said. The new shops will be designed by British company Checkland Kindleysides, which has created interior solutions for Rolls-Royce, Vodafone and Levis, among others.

The two projects are a continuation of the partnerships with Handy, Technopolis and M-World chains that the carrier has had over the past three years.

Mobiltel’s closest rival, Greek OTE’s local wireless unit Globul, also expands its network on franchise contracts. In April, the operator started looking for partners for smaller areas of the country. The candidates were required to have their own retail space and a capital of 30 000 leva.

FIRST BURGER KING RESTAURANTS TO OPEN IN BULGARIA IN JUNE
20:53 Mon 19 May 2008 - Alex Bivol
The first two Burger King fast-food restaurants in Bulgaria will open in June, the company that owns the franchise rights for Bulgaria said on May 19, as quoted by Dnevnik daily.

The restaurant in Mall Varna will open on June 12, by which time the first restaurant in Sofia, in City Center Sofia mall, should already be operational, according to Amrest Bulgaria, a subsidiary of Polish company Amrest.

AmRest currently manages 252 restaurants under the KFC, Pizza Hut, Burger King, freshpoint, and Rodeo Drive brands in Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary, Bulgaria, Serbia and Russia. It also holds the rights to the Starbucks franchise in Poland, Czech Republic and Hungary.

Last year, it bought the rights to open restaurants under the KFC and Pizza Hut brands in Bulgaria, opening its first KFC outlet in November 2007. Both chains are already present in the country through other franchisees.

Burger King thus becomes the fourth fast-food chain to enter Bulgaria, following in the footsteps of McDonald’s, its biggest competitor on global scale, KFC and Subway.

DOVERIE BRICO TO EXPAND MR BRICOLAGE DIY FRANCHISE ACROSS REGION
16:01 Wed 26 Mar 2008

Bulgarian company Doverie Brico, which holds the rights of the French Do It Yourself (DIY) retailer Mr. Bricolage for Bulgaria, Macedonia and Serbia, is in negotiations to expand its franchise across the region – to Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Kosovo, Andrei Evtimov, Mr. Bricolage’s managing director for Bulgaria, said, quoted by Dnevnik daily. “We expect to wrap up the negotiations with the French company soon,” he added.

“In Bulgaria we invested in good locations at a time when the market was only starting to take shape and now these investments are paying off,” said Evtimov.

Established in 1999 expressly to introduce the French brand to Bulgaria, Doverie Brico currently operates 10 outlets in the country and is working on projects in Serbia and Macedonia. It would also like to promote the Mr. Bricolage products in other of the region’s markets. There is large potential in Albania, Kosovo and some of the ex-Yugoslav countries, since their market is still underdeveloped, Evtimov pointed out.

“In Bulgaria we invested in good locations at a time when the market was only starting to take shape and now these investments are paying off,” said Evtimov.

The company plans to open at least one, possibly two, stores in Serbia and at least one outlet in Macedonia by the end of 2009.

Mr.Bricolage’s main competition on the Bulgarian market is its German counterpart Praktiker.

The Austrian home improvement retailer BauMax is poised to join the DIY market this year.
